Chapter 2: Necklace of wolf and swan feathers
The second chapter of Fairy Gone begins with a look at certain aspects of the past of the protagonists. Maria remembers how she has suffered with the loss of her loved ones one after another during her childhood, which forced her to fend for herself. For her part, Free remembers her days as a war fighter, which gave her the opportunity to become a "Fairy Soldier". Both deny their luck, good or bad, that took them on a difficult path.
Back in the present, Maria is shown adapting quickly to her new life as a member of Dorothea, while Subcomandante Free is questioned about the decision to recruit her. Soon after, both are given the mission of intercepting an illegal transaction from the Arcame mafia that involves "Artificial Fairies." This results in a battle against one of the members of the criminal organization responsible for overseeing the surrender, which turns out to be a powerful "Fairy Soldier" and the former comrade-in-arms of Free during the war, Wolfram Row
Opinion
This was a development chapter that allowed us to know a little more about the pair of protagonists, as well as the integration of new characters that are now Maria's companions in Dorothea. In addition to the formal presentation of Wolfram Row (which already had a brief appearance in the previous chapter) as the former warmate of Free and now a member of the mafia group Arcame. This will act as a new antagonist, perhaps the main one in history, as a counterpart of Free to be the representative of the aforementioned criminal organization Arcame, which apparently will be the main enemy that Dorothea will face.
Fairy Gone in this episode follows the same recipe as in the previous one. It begins with a sequence from the past, followed by a brief introduction of the plot, and then begins a confrontation with a lot of action that has a quiet conclusion. But the most contrasted thing is that the reunion of Wolfram and Free has many similarities with that of Veronica and Maria. Although with differences, these can be attributed to the personalities of each duo, so the episode is, in essence, the same as the previous one.
A chapter of development
While it is true that this second chapter becomes quite repetitive, it helps a lot to understand the Fairy Gone universe a little, by discussing some details and thus opening the way to the following arcs. This can be observed during the presentation of the director and commander of the First Unit of Dorothea, and superior of Free, Nein Auraa, when she receives the Free report of what happened during the auction. This document details the way Maria became a "Fairy Soldier" using a "Primal Fairy", which is unprecedented. The director Nein decides to keep that secret, perhaps to avoid commotion in the high commands. This allows us to imagine possible scenarios in which Maria will be involved in the future if her situation is known.
On the other hand, it reveals a new tool that was used in the war and that will be of great importance in the following battles. I refer to the "Artificial Fairies", which represent a great force in the fighting, and it shows us that the war studies and experiments that are carried out on these creatures are more extensive than we could think. Maybe we should expect more surprises like this in future episodes, and Arcame will definitely be involved
Characters
As I mentioned above, in this chapter several new characters, members of Dorothea, have been introduced. Some only made a small appearance on stage, but others were formally presented. I already talked about the director Nein. She did not show her physical abilities and her powers, but she did show good judgment and good leadership; Free respects her enough. On the other hand we were introduced to the duo of "Fairy Soldiers": Serge Tovah and Clara Kisenaria, who helped in the confrontation against Wolfram. Serge possesses a fairy that allows him to shoot projectiles, which gives him the position of sniper, and on the other hand Clara her fairy gives her the ability to unfold and see through the eyes of the creatures, which gives her the role as an observer Your teamwork is quite synergistic.
On the other hand, the most important revelation of the second episode is: Wolfram, who was a little more developed. His abilities as "Soldier Fairy" are quite impressive, as he managed to maintain a fight against Free without much effort, although he was overwhelmed when Serge and Clara supported their partner. Wolfram is shown as a serious, cold and pragmatic man, who leaves no loose ends. Regarding his motivations, Free questions him, mentioning that he had a wife and a daughter, but at the end of the ending it is implied that they did not have a good destiny. This perhaps has a great weight in its present actions
The protagonist
Maria demonstrated skills that Free did not possess. His tracing ability is evidently the product of a training as a hunter, as he was raised in a rural town. Of course this becomes even more obvious observing the great skill with which he handles the long rifle he always carries with her. This formation contrasts with his companions who apparently are mostly soldiers. Your skills will be helpful for Free and Dorothea, since their work is more about tracking, than fighting head-on
On the other hand, his inexperience is noted as "Fairy Soldier" and in direct combat. Maria during the exchange of blows was quite useless, even letting her fairy hurt. Not to mention that he failed to contain the "Artificial Fairies". While he is quite capable, he will have to go a long way to master his new powers.
Conclusions
Fairy Gone in its second chapter continues to develop the plot and present characters. The development of the episode is painfully repetitive and does not bring anything new to the narrative. However, the care he has in the development of his characters is quite evident, since none of them gets out of his role and his skills and weaknesses are respected. Proof of this is the expected and necessary uselessness of Maria during the exchange of blows at such an early moment in the plot. It's not a super genius class, and that's clear to you
Finally, I must reiterate what I believe is the first stumbling block of Fairy Gone: the great similarity between the relationship between Maria-Veronica and Free-Wolgram, and its identical presentation. Although their nuances are completely different, they had to opt for something totally different or at least present them in another way. We'll see if eventually they manage to make us forget this.
