Episode 1: Cruelty
The episode begins with a boy carrying a young girl, who is apparently wounded. But to understand the situation, we return a little to the past. Tanjiro, the boy from the beginning, is the oldest of a family of 5 brothers and a widowed mother. He prepares to go to town to sell coal and thus be able to feed his family. His trip to the town extends until sunset, which causes old Saburo to invite him to spend the night at home, since the mountain is dangerous at nightfall. The next day, Tanjiro leaves home only to find a devastating scene: his entire family has been murdered. Only his sister Nezuko seems to still retain heat in his body so he takes her with him to look for a doctor.
In the middle of the road, Nezuko begins to behave strangely and this causes them to fall. The strange behavior extends and the young woman attacks Tanjiro. This ends up understanding that his sister has transformed into a demon devourer of men. However, it is not completely lost, she still recognizes it. But this might not matter when a demon hunter appears before them. Tanjiro begs him not to kill his sister, but this only causes discomfort in the hunter, who reproaches him not to fight. Tanjiro accepts the challenge and pounces on him, is unconscious in the process but manages to impress the hunter with his strategy. But not only him, Nezuko also ends up convincing him in a certain way to bet on both. Giyuu Tomioka, the hunter, tells him to look for Sakonji Urokodaki. Both brothers leave their home behind and begin their journey.
"When happiness falls apart, it always smells like blood"
Tanjiro is a very interesting protagonist, something stereotypical of Shounen, but it does not stop pleasing. From the beginning we see him as someone reliable and kind. Since the death of his father, he has been responsible for supporting his family. He is very loved by his brothers, besides being appreciated and respected by the people of the town. Added to his great level of charisma, Tanjiro has a very peculiar ability: he has a good sense of smell. Although to say it that way is to leave it short, its ability to recognize aromas is on another level. He is able to recognize who broke a plate just because of the smell that emanates. This ability also plays an important role when he recognizes that Nezuko is his sister but at the same time something has changed in her, he became a demon. He also infers that someone else murdered his family, besides the smell of his family there was someone else's.
At first I found the phrase with which I open this analysis strange, why smell of blood? Based on the great list of tragedies I know, I would not dare say that blood is always related to unhappiness. But in Kimetsu no Yaiba, it's like that. But more than in the blood, it's the smell ... it's Tanjiro's own ability. The fact that his nose is so developed makes him relate everything to an aroma. What only causes me to ask myself how do I start this relationship between the collapse of happiness and the smell of blood? Does it have to do with the death of your father? Because if we stop to think a little, I think it is the death of his father that started this 'collapse of happiness'. Then came the massacre suffered by his family, which again is coated with this smell.
Demons devouring men
Let's talk then of the beings that start with the tragedy that marks this beginning: the devouring demons of men. These beings appear under the shelter of dusk. According to what old Saburo told us, we can say that they are fearsome demons that destroy everything they find. These monsters are part of the stories told by the elders, or at least they do so. Tanjiro is incredulous of Saburo's words at the beginning, he even thinks that he only feels lonely. However, she can not help but remember that her grandmother had already told her something similar before she died. But not only the demons are part of these stories, also their executioners: the hunters of demons. The existence of these beings is proven when Tanjiro witnesses the massacre of his family. In addition to seeing his own sister becoming one of these demons.
As its name dictates, these demons feed on human flesh. That's what Nezuko tried to do, eat meat, his brother's. However, somehow Tanjiro's words came to her and she could not hurt him. This is a hunch, maybe it happened because Nezuko is not a complete demon, since he still does not eat meat. Although it can also be the product of the huge filial love he has towards his brother. Whatever the case, Nezuko now has demon blood mixed in it, which triggered his transformation. According to Giyuu, that is the way the demons reproduce themselves. Another curious thing about these beings, and that we saw with Nezuko, is that they grow to subdue their prey. Tanjiro will have to strengthen himself if he wants to recover the humanity of his sister.
The loss and keep going
There is a very insignificant part at first impression, but that caught my attention. When Tanjiro falls into the snow he says: "The snow saved my life. Although it also made me fall. "It's very interesting how this simple action, and phrase, perfectly sums up an axiom of life. For it is very peculiar how many times what seems like an evil ends up bringing good things. The loss of loved ones is hard and difficult to fit, however it is that pain that drives us forward. At least that is what Tanjiro is doing, he has already experienced multiple losses and can not, and does not want to, allow this to happen again. That is why he makes the decision to save his sister, the only important being that he has left. It is because of her, and her condition, that she overcomes pain.
Following this, Giyuu is another character who seems to know the loss. It is for him that Tanjiro regains the fighting spirit, because he does not allow it to take a position of supplication without first fighting. Years of experience hunting demons have given Giyuu a number of experiences. He understands that a person's weakness starts in his heart, which is why he inspires Tanjiro's rage to eradicate the weakness that was taking hold of him. I found this scene impressive, because the combination of action and word manages to portray a true emotion: overcoming. Yes, the overcoming can be portrayed: in the look of Tanjiro, in taking the stone and throwing it, in standing up and fighting against an enemy that knows can not defeat. That is a true catharsis, and no, it is not for the spectator, it is for the character, it is he who has grown up.
Final comment
What a piece of home! Of course I make it clear, I do not know the history of manga, so everything that comes will be new to me. Despite not being a manga reader, I decided to follow this anime for two reasons: demons and ufotable. I am an incurable fan of everything that involves demons or the simple term 'demon', it is something exquisitely fascinating. And well, I am also a faithful lover of quality animation, and I know that ufotable is a guarantee of that. The truth is that they did not deny me, the animation is so fluid that it almost makes me drool. The almost obsessive detail that they used when designing each background, animating the blizzards and the edge of the sword and ax, is synonymous with how much we should expect in this series. Also the character design is a very important visual point, there is much visual appeal, especially in Nezuko. She suffered many changes of expression in the chapter and everything was taken care of in detail, including her new muzzle (for lack of better word) of bamboo.
As for the musical section, I do not have much to say: Yuki Kajiura and LiSA. Only by reading these names within the staff could I guarantee the quality. The truth is that I'm not wrong, Yuki's work is sublime. The music used in the scenes fits as perfectly as Swiss watch gears. Time, feeling, action, everything is perfectly reflected. And well, what to say about the opening, it is a composition of LiSA, that leaves the bar very high. If at some point I thought I would not beat ADAMAS, it's because I still did not get to Gurenge, the starting point for this anime. I have no words to describe it, it is something that is heard, felt, seen ... yes, the visual section is another strong attraction of this opening, as I said: ufotable is quality.
Finally, it is time to close with this, but not before asking: What did you think of this beginning? Do you think that tragedy is a perfect way to start telling a story?
